Šešelj requests for termination of trial against him

Vojislav Šešelj has filed a request for termination of proceedings against him at the Hague Tribunal.

Šešelj said he based the request on to flagrant violation of his right to a trial within a reasonable period of time.

The leader of the opposition Serb Radical Party (SRS) noted that he filed the request in the context of abuse of proceedings. He surrendered to the Hague in February 2003, and has been kept in the Hague detention units ever since, while the trial against him started in November 2007.

Assessing that his detention period certainly exceeds all records, Šešelj noted that not only did the Hague fail to adopt a first-degree verdict in his case, but the trial against him has not been completed either.
