Romania remains optimistic that it will be able to join Europe’s Schengen passport-free zone this year, Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi said Wednesday.
“After what we experienced in the first part of this year, I am prudent (…) but we have all the leverage to be moderately optimistic” Baconschi added.
In June, France suggested a halfway solution in a two-stage membership; a first stage before the end of this year with the opening of air borders in the presence of police from other states, and a second stage in 2012, with the opening of land borders.
“I hope that we will obtain the agreement of all the state members for this scenario at the European council on home affairs that will take place on September 22,” Baconschi said.
