UNESCO to inaugurate a new Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre in southeastern Europe based in Sofia

A new Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre in southeastern Europe based in Sofia, capital of Bulgaria, will open on Monday, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said on Sunday.

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova is due to inaugurate the Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in South-Eastern Europe under the auspices of UNESCO while she officially visits the country, said a UNESCO statement.

The center to be opened in Sofia is one of six around the world that focus on intangible cultural heritage. This center is the only one in Europe, therefore “plays a crucially important role,” the UN cultural agency said.
