EU prepares progress report on Montenegro

“Montenegro is in principle close to opening accession negotiations. Now it needs to run this final straight towards this very ambitious goal,” President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Baroso announced. However, he stressed that significant work remains to be done.

Montenegro won’t become a NATO member at the summit due to be held in May, NATO secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on TV following his meeting with Montenegrin Prime Minister Igor Luksic.

Luksic, together with Foreign Minister Milan Rocen, started an official visit to Brussels on Wednesday to demonstrate country’s efforts towards accession into the EU and NATO.

The visit is important, as the EU is now preparing its progress report on Montenegro.
