Kosovo Serb Indicted for War Crimes

A Kosovo court has confirmed an indictment against Aleksandar Bulatovic for suspected war crimes committed in April 1999 in Fushe Kosovo, known as Kosovo Polje in Serbian.A European judge from the EU rule of law mission to Kosovo, EULEX, established that there are grounds to rise the indictment against the defendant, a Kosovo Serb, who is suspected of committing crimes against Kosovo Albanian civilians during the conflict in 1998-1999.

EULEX’s press release issued on Monday morning states that “the judge also declared all the evidence collected during the investigation as admissible.”

Bulatovic was arrested on August 13, by the Kosovo police at the Kosovo-Serbia border in Merdare, based on a warrant issued by a EULEX prosecutor. He has been in custody since his arrest.

According to the indictment, Bulatovic took part in abusing Xheladin Idrizi, a Kosovo Albanian civilian, who was found killed in his home in Fushe Kosove, in April 1999.

Another two Kosovo Serbs, who remain at large, are also wanted for this crime.

Over 150 Kosovo Albanians were killed in the town during the 1999 war, Ahmet Grejcevci, of the Association Searching for Missing Persons and War Crimes in the municipality, told BIRN.

The case is being prosecuted by a EULEX prosecutor from the Special Prosecution Office of Kosovo.

Thirteen years after the end of war in Kosovo, of 6,019 persons reported to the International Red Cross as missing by their families, over 1,700 remain unaccounted for. Most are Kosovo Albanians.
