Montenegrin President Filip Vujanovic has said that negotiations on forming a parliamentary majority in the country are in the final stages.After the parliament is formed, the new government and prime minister will be determined, Vujanovic said. Montenegro held parliamentary elections on October 14.
“Negotiations on a coalition are in the final stages and we should wait for their completion and the formation of the parliament. And then, within 30 days, the new government will be determined,” Vujanovic told reporters in Herceg Novi, where he attended a ceremony marking the day of the municipality.
He expressed his belief that all the lawmakers would respect the terms laid out in the constitution for the formation of parliament and the election of a new government. Asked what he would do if former president and current leader of the Democratic Party of Socialists, Milo Djukanovic, were chosen for the post of prime minister, Vujanovic said it was necessary to await the results of the election.
“We’ll see who will be the candidate for prime minister; let’s wait. The deadline for the election of the prime minister is approaching, and then I believe we will see who will be the candidate,” he said.
In the October parliamentary election, the European Montenegro coalition, headed by Djukanovic’s Democratic Party of Socialists, won the most seats – 39 of 81. It is expected to form the new government with the support of one or more ethnic minority parties.
The election campaign was marked by Djukanovic’s frequent speeches, prompting speculation that he was intending to return as prime minister.
Djukanovic served three consecutive terms as premier from 1991 to 1998. He was president of Montenegro from 1998 to 2002 and prime minister again from 2003 to 2006, when he quit frontline politics. But he returned as prime minister in February 2008, remaining until December 21, 2010, when he again stepped down.
