A group of NGOs on Wednesday warned that Albania’s institutions are failing to notify voters of their presence on preliminary electoral rolls ahead of the June parliamentary elections.“The government is blatantly omitting its legal obligation to inform voters of their presence of the electoral lists and the voting booth where they will cast a ballot,” the Coalition of Local Observers said.
“This process [of notification] has not started… because of the failure of the Ministry of Interior to transfer the necessary funds for the notification of voters,” it added.
Albania has long history of elections that do not meet international standards and end in political disputes. The 2013 elections, due on June 23, are seen a key test for the country’s already battered aspirations for EU membership.
The coalition urged the Minister of Interior, Flamur Noka, to speed up the process, underlining that after March 3, local government offices do not have a legal obligation to notify voters about their presence on electoral lists.
“After this date it remains an obligation for the citizens to check and verify whether they are included on the final voters’ lists ahead of the polls,” they said.
