Bosnia Serb Entity Offers Ministry to Bosniak

Zeljka Cvijanovic, the new prime minister of Bosnia’s mainly Serb entity, has offered the Bosniak Party of Democratic Action, SDA, a ministry in the new government. The Republika Srpska’s new Prime Minister, Zeljka Cvijanovic, on March 4 said that her Alliance of Independent Social Democrats, SNSD, will offer one ministry to the mostly Bosniak Party of Democratic Action, SDA.

After she receives three proposed names, she will decide on the new minister of trade and tourism, she explained.

Cvijanovic announced the offer after a meeting with the main party’s coalition partners, the Socialist Party, SP, and the Democratic People’s Union, DNS.

The entity President, Milorad Dodik, named Cvijanovic as the new prime minister on February 27. She will form a new government by changing only ministers from her own SNSD. Ministers from the SP and DNS will not change.

Media reports said that the new Bosniak minister will most likely be Dzevad Mahmutovic.

Aleksandar Dzombic, the former Republika Srpska Prime Minister, quit on February 27. Cvijanovic served as his minister of economic relations and regional cooperation. She is seen as one of Dodik’s closest associates.

Dzombic resigned saying no longer enjoyed the support of Dodik and the SNSD. According to opposition parties, Dzombic was removed because he no longer carried out Dodik’s orders unconditionally.

The new cabinet must now be confirmed by the entity parliament in which the SNSD holds 37 of the 83 seats. Together with its governing coalition partners, holding another eight seats, they have a majority.
