Croatia Convicts Serb Priest for Death Threats

A court in the Croatian town of Knin gave a six-month suspended sentence to the Serbian Orthodox cleric for threatening to kill a journalist.Aleksandar Bogojevic, the former prior of Krka, a famous medieval Serbian Orthodox monastery in the Sibenik region, was convicted on Tuesday of threatening to kill Croatian journalist Zeljko Huljev because he didn’t like what the reporter had written about him.

The court heard that on March 13, 2012, Bogojevic blocked Huljev’s car with his own vehicle on a road leading from the village of Kistanje to the Krka monastery, local media reported.

Bogojevic got out of his car and threatened Huljev that he would “call all the priests from the monastery to throw [the journalist and his car] into the Krka river”.

He “seriously threatened” Huljev, “frightening and disturbing” him, said judge Stipe Cipcic.

Huljev, a journalist for Croatian national daily Jutarnji List, expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict, saying that it allowed the cleric “to attack people on the street without sanctions”.

Bogojevic will be jailed for six months if he reoffends within a year.

The cleric didn’t attend the court session or comment on the sentence afterwards.
