EU calls on Albania to fix poll dispute

The European Union on Tuesday called for for a resolution of the power struggle among Albanian parties to control the Central Electoral Commission ahead of the June 23 elections.

Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule told the 5th meeting of the EU-Albania Association and Stabilisation Council in Luxembourg that there was “an urgent need for political parties to restore mutual trust and demonstrate their commitment to the rigorous and non-partisan functioning of Albania’s democratic institutions.

“We are concerned about recent developments as regards the composition of the Central Election Commission and its possible repercussions on the electoral process,” he added.
