Belgrade calls on Kosovo Serbs to vote on local elections

Top officials in Belgrade on Friday called on Serbs in the north of Kosovo to show unity and participate in the local elections scheduled for November 3.

“We have no intention of abandoning the struggle we have been involved in for 14 years, led by these very people [Serbs from Kosovo], whose perseverance we are proud of and to whom we give our full support,” Marko Djuric, an advisor to the Serbian president, said after a three-hour meeting attended by Belgrade’s senior politicians.

The last local elections were held in November 2009, but the vote was boycotted in the northern Serb-run municipalities, where local leaders were elected in a separate vote organised by Belgrade.
