U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns is visiting Cairo beginning today, the State Department announced on Friday.
Secretary of State John Kerry asked Burns to visit Egypt again to discuss with Egyptian leaders “the importance of avoiding violence and helping to facilitate a peaceful and inclusive political process,” the announcement said.
“The United States looks forward to seeing a peaceful transition to a democratically elected civilian government that protects the rights of all Egyptians,” it said.
He will be joining officials from the European Union and others in the region “who share our goal for a successful transition in Egypt,” it said.
