Pakistani PM calls for ceasefire at Line of Control

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said Thursday that it was imperative for both India and Pakistan to take effective steps to ensure and restore ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC).

In a statement from his office, Sharif expressed his sadness over the recent exchange of fire between the Pakistani and Indian troops in the disputed Kashmir region which has resulted in a flare-up of tensions and loss of lives.

Indian defense officials say that Pakistani troops attacked an Indian post along the LoC in Poonch sector in the disputed Kashmir region late Monday night, killing five Indian soldiers.

Pakistan military said on Thursday that Indian troops fired at its border area and injured a civilian along the LoC, which divides the two countries in the disputed Kashmir region. The army also says that Indian troops fired on a post on Wednesday and critically injured two soldiers.

Sharif convened a special meeting at the Foreign Ministry to discuss the situation arising out of the escalations along the LoC, his office said.
