Turkey pledges to support Mali’s political stability

Turkey’s application to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to send a police force to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) has reaffirmed Ankara’s commitment to the stability and security of Mali and has shown its increasing interest in the West African country.

The Turkish ambassador to Mali said that Turkey applied to the UNSC to send police forces to aid peacekeeping operations in Mali. “The talks started a few months ago, and negotiations are proceeding,” the ambassador said, underlining that Turkey is ready to support the West African country in every field, particularly in relation to its political stability.

The application to the UNSC is the latest confirmation of Turkey’s increasing interest in Mali. Turkey, following the recent developments in Mali closely, also used the country’s presidential election as an opportunity to underline its desire for political stability in Mali, which is suffering from a terror threat in the northern part of the country.
