Egypt’s new constitution to balance powers between President and Parliament

imgSenior member of the 50-strong committee tasked with amending the 2012 constitution Mohamed Abdel-Aziz said the political system in the new constitution will be balanced between the president and the parliament.

The party which wins the majority of votes will choose a prime minister who must be approved by 51 per cent of the parliament members, said Abdel-Aziz of the political system sub-committee.

The sub-committee has agreed that if the parliament fails to approve a prime minister, the president will name one and then seek the parliament’s approval of the nominee, he added.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Rights and Liberties sub-committee Hoda el-Sadda indicated that the sub-committee reached an initial agreement on 12 articles out of 39 under review.

She said that the new constitution’s preamble will be also changed to state that the national charter of Egypt is mainly inspired by the ideals of the two Revolutions of 25 January 2011 and 30 June 2013.
