Bulgarian President to call Security Council over refugee influx

imgBulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has announced that he would schedule a sitting of the Consultative Council of National Security over the ongoing refugee crisis in the country.

Plevneliev told reporters on Tuesday that he would announce the date for the sitting “within days,” noting that the budget of Bulgaria’s security services will be also discussed.

“The point is not only to discuss refugees. The Consultative Council on National Security is the most important tool for reaching consensus in the country. What kind of consensus are we talking about? That the refugees should receive electricity, water and humane treatment? Is there anyone who is against that?” the President said.

Bulgaria has the capacity to accommodate about 5,000 refugees, while over 6,500 have arrived in the country since the beginning of 2013, with local authorities expecting the number to exceed 11,000 by the end of the year.

The country is the gateway to the European Union for refugees fleeing Syria via Turkey, many crossing the border illegally to seek asylum.
