Egypt wants AU membership restored

imgEgyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmi urged here on Monday the African Union (AU) to restore Egypt’s membership suspended after the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi.

Fahmi, who was on a two-day visit to Algeria, indicated at a joint press conference with his Algerian counterpart Ramtane Lamamra that the decision to freeze Egypt’s AU membership “was wrong and did not take into consideration the specific circumstances that Egypt was facing.”

Fahmi called on the AU’s Peace and Security Council “to review the decision quickly,” given that “Egypt is in the process of issuing a new constitution, ahead of bringing back the constitutional structure into force.”
