Kerry, Indian PM discuss bilateral relations

imgIndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday met here with visiting U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry Friday on bilateral issues as well as regional and global issues, said Indian official sources.

The 40-minute meeting was Modi’s first high-level one with a U. S. official since he came to power in late May.

Kerry, who arrived here on Wednesday for a three-day visit, said the United States is eager to “partner” with the new government of India in its policy of “cooperation of all, development for all.”

The United States had in the past denied visa to Modi due to the controversial 2002 communal riots in Gujarat, where Modi was chief minister for 13 years.

During his visit, Kerry also met with his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj, as well as Indian finance and defense minister Arun Jaitley. The two countries also held an annual bilateral strategic dialogue.
