Barroso, Poroshenko discuss Ukraine situation

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso held talks with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Tuesday, condemning the shelling of a refugee convoy in eastern Ukraine.

Following an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine’s Poroshenko, Barroso decided that EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, Vice-President Gunther Oettinger, responsible for energy, and Commissioner for Trade Karel de Gucht would represent the European Union at the Customs Union-Ukraine Summit meeting in Minsk on Aug. 26.

President Barroso expressed his concern with the security situation and condemned the shelling of a convoy of internally displaced people. EC President urged an enquiry on this incident and recalled the need to protect civilian lives. He underlined the need to stop border hostilities and the flow of arms and personnel from Russia into Ukraine.

Barroso invited Poroshenko to visit Brussels in the near future.​
