The US expressed its hope to see “wide participation in the elections by all Ukrainians, including in Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk,” when they go to vote new legislative representatives to parliament on Sunday.
“This is another milestone for a nation that is again demonstrating its commitment to an enduring democratic process despite the political upheaval of the past year and considerable security challenges that remain in some parts of the country,” said State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki to reporters Thursday.
The US commended the Ukrainian government on the preparation of free elections and strongly condemned “any interference in this legitimate democratic process and the ability of the people of Ukraine to peacefully choose their own leaders.”
Psaki asserted, “the only legitimate elections in Ukraine are the Rada elections on October 26 and the December 7 elections with local leaders in the Donbass special status zone.” She reiterated that the US, “stands ready to work with Ukraineآ’s new Parliament to fight corruption, promote reforms and pursue a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the east of the country.”
