German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday discussed the situation in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a telephone conversation, the German government said.
Merkel underlined the necessity to fully implement the Minsk deal reached between Ukraine’s government and insurgents, saying elections in the east of the country must be held in accordance with Ukrainian laws.
The two leaders have agreed that the contact group on Ukraine should meet quickly to discuss the elections as well as economic situation in the region, according to the statement.
Another topic of the talks was gas negotiations led by the European Commission. Merkel called on Putin to support the search for a quick solution to this issue to the best of his ability before the winter starts.
