EU FMs discuss Mideast, Ukraine situation

imgEU foreign ministers Monday began here their formal monthly meeting with two main topics on the agenda, Ukraine and the Middle East.

The EU Foreign Affairs Council is being chaired for the first time by the new EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini.

“We will discuss Ukraine, that it the main issue on the agenda today. We will discuss sanctions but not only that, because we all know very well that if we work only on that and not on the other two tracks, even sanctions will not work,” she told reporters ahead of the meeting.

She said that the other big point on the agenda is the Middle East.

“I will report from my visit there. We will discuss what kind of EU role can be there to re-launch the process, to get the two states living in security and peace next to each other and we share visions on that with ministers in view of EU role,” she said.

“We are working and I was also personally in contact during the last days with Secretary Kerry, with President Abbas, with the Israeli side, with the Jordanians, to see what kind of diplomatic and political initiative can be there because we all know very well that what we need is not just a recognition, we need the building of the Palestinian state and that can live next to the Israeli one in peace and security “, she said.

“Our effort will be today to understand which way the EU can do to re-put on track the political perspective that at the moment doesn’t seem to be there but we desperately need both for Palestine and Israel and their security,” said Mogehrini.
