Tunisia’s army spokesperson says an ambush by extremists in a mountainous region near the Algerian border has killed two soldiers and wounded three others.
Brigadier General Belhassen Oueslati told the state news agency on Tuesday that the attack took place near the mountain of Mghilla in the central west of the country and he cautioned that the toll was still provisional.
The mountainous area around the city of Kasserine has been a hotbed for extremists for the past few years, descending from their mountain hideouts to attack soldiers and police.
The al-Qaeda linked Oqba ibn Nafaa brigade is based in this region – the same group the Tunisian government has said is behind the March 18 attack on the national museum that killed 22 people, mostly tourists.
