France says it discuss new UN sanctions list for Central Africa

Paris – France said on Thursday it was working with its partners in the UN Security Council to impose new sanctions on individuals who threaten the peace and political transition block in the Central African Republic (CAR).
Car has been in turmoil since Muslim fighters briefly seized Seleka power in the country with a Christian majority in 2013. They then handed power to an interim government, but still control swathes of the north.
The elections are scheduled for October 18, but should be delayed for technical and security reasons.
Armed groups and politicians on Wednesday boycotted the start of a political forum in the former French colony. There was an outbreak of violence in the capital, Bangui, from the end of September, triggered by the murder of a Muslim man, which saw 77 people killed and 400 injured.
“We support the adoption of new sanctions by the UN Security Council on those who threaten the peace and stability and prevent the political transition process,” said the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Romain Nadal journalists in a daily press briefing.
“We are working in this direction with our Security Council partners.”
Nadal refused to give details.
