In less than a year, the Ivorian security forces foiled at least five attacks in Abidjan. The last was in January.
Two modes of operation were privileged: the explosion of a car bomb and a commando attack against public places frequented by expatriates. Jihadist sleeper cells linked to the Ansar Dine group have also been dismantled in Abidjan and Bouaké. Hamed Bakayoko, Minister of the Interior, conducted a thorough audit of existing security devices in various public places, including shopping
centers.
For its part, France has dispatched two experts Ivory Coast counterterrorism working with men Commissioner Youssouf Kouyaté, commander of the operational decisions Coordination Centre (CDDO), a joint unit which ensures the security of major cities. Upon nightfall in Abidjan, the Anti-Terrorism Squad of the police deployed near restaurants Plateau and Marcory, where expatriates have their habits.
The French teaching group Jacques Prévert is now under the protection of the Force research and police assault (Frap), the Ivorian equivalent of Raid. The government is negotiating with the United Nations to organize a joint exercise simulating a terrorist attack in the economic capital. The objective is to prepare the Ivorian forces to an immediate response in case of attack and allow for better organization of the emergency services.
