The European Union (EU) expressed Thursday its concern over the tense situation in the zone of Alguergarat in the south-west of Western Sahara, underlining that EU supports the United Nations’ efforts to reach a fair, lasting and mutually acceptable solution, enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination.
The recent tensions in the narrow buffer zone in the south-west of Western Sahara are worrying, the spokesperson of the European Commission told APS.
In this regard, she underlined that “EU has, on many occasions, expressed its concern over the long duration of this conflict and its effects on security and respect of human rights in the region,” underlining that EU “calls on all the parties to give up violence.”
“EU supports the efforts of the United Nations’ Secretary General to achieve a fair, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution which will allow the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara, as part of arrangements that are consistent with the objectives and principles of the UN Charter,” she added.
Euro-MPs Paloma Lopez and Javier Couso urged Wednesday the European Union to take the necessary measures to support the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) and to put an end to the violations of the cease-fire and human rights by Morocco.
