EU welcomes Iraq victory against IS

The EU congratulated Monday the Iraqi people and government following the holding of a victory celebration on Sunday in Iraq to mark the defeat of the so-called Islamic State (IS).
“The (Iraqi) Prime Minister’s remarks that the fight against corruption will represent a continuation of the fight against Daesh (IS) and the government’s commitment to respect the rights of all of Iraqis, men and women regardless of their ethnicity or religious identity, are also welcome signs in view of the many challenges that lie ahead,” said an EU statement.
The EU will support the government to persevere on the path of reforms and reconciliation as this is the only effective means to defeat extremism and terrorism for the long term, it added.
