Bosniak Leader’s Sudden Death Creates Vacuum in Sandzak

The sudden death of Bosniak strongman Muamer Zukorlic has shocked the mainly Muslim region, which straddles Serbia and Montenegro, and where he left a unique mark.

One of the largest crowds that the town of Novi Pazar in southwest Serbia has ever seen gathered on Sunday to say farewell to Bosniak leader Muamer Zukorlic.

He died suddenly on Saturday while lecturing at the private International University of Novi Pazar, which he had established.

The former Mufti of Sandzak, leader of the Justice and Reconciliation Party, SPP, and deputy speaker of Serbia’s parliament died aged 51 of a heart attack, shocking Muslims in the region, the diaspora, and around the world.

As a religious leader and later as a politician, but also as an entrepreneur and philanthropist, he left a unique mark in Bosniak politics and society in the Sandzak region, which straddles parts of southwestern Serbia and northern Montenegro.
