US intelligence confirms Daesh’s Khorasan branch behind Iran blasts: Reuters

Communications intercepts collected by the United States confirmed that Daesh’s Khorasan branch carried out twin bombings in Iran that killed nearly 100 people, Reuters reported on Friday citing US intelligence sources.

The sources said the intelligence comprised communications intercepts, without providing further details.

Wednesday’s bombings were the deadliest of their kind in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Daesh on Thursday claimed responsibility for the bombings, saying two operatives wearing explosive suicide belts staged the attack during a memorial service for Qassem Soleimani, a senior military commander assassinated in Iraq in a 2020 U.S. drone strike.

Daesh, however, did not specify that its Khorasan branch was responsible for the bombings in the southeastern Iranian city of Kerman.

“The US has pretty clear intel” that Daesh Khorasan conducted the attack, one source told Reuters.
