Antonio Guterres: Every place in Gaza is a potential killing zone

The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, expressed concern on Monday about the situation in the Gaza Strip, saying that “nowhere is safe” in the besieged enclave.

“The extreme level of fighting and destruction in Gaza is incomprehensible and unforgivable… Every place is a potential killing zone,” Guterres posted on X.

He stated that it is high time for the parties in conflict to show political courage and the will to finally reach an agreement.

Guterres’ spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said that the UN calls on all parties to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and to continuously care for civilians and civilian objects.

“I can further tell you that we and our humanitarian partners continue to assist families displaced from northern Gaza to areas in the south,” he told reporters.

Dujarric emphasized that the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has stated that with each new evacuation directive, families in Gaza are forced to make impossible choices: stay amid active hostilities or flee to areas with little space or services.

“There is no safe place in Gaza. Not shelters, not hospitals, not so-called humanitarian zones,” Dujarric emphasized.

Violating a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire, Israel has faced international condemnation amidst its ongoing brutal offensive on Gaza since the Hamas attack on October 7.

Since then, nearly 38,700 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed, and more than 89,000 have been injured, according to local health authorities.

More than nine months after the Israeli attack, large parts of Gaza are in ruins.

Israel has been accused of genocide before the International Court of Justice, whose latest ruling ordered an immediate halt to its military operation in the southern city of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians sought refuge from the war before being attacked on May 6, according to Anadolu Agency.
