An Israeli accused of spying for Iran is on trial

Israeli citizen Vladimir Verhovsky (35) has been accused of planning an assassination of Israeli officials, acting under the orders of Iranian intelligence services, according to Israeli police and prosecutors.

According to the indictment, Verhovsky, who lives in central Israel, was in contact with foreign agents connected to Iran. The indictment states that Verhovsky established communication with these agents in August 2024. One of the agents, who presented himself as an Israeli citizen from Canada under the name Eli, was allegedly the key link between Verhovsky and Iranian intelligence.

Despite knowing that Eli was acting against the current Israeli authorities, Verhovsky carried out a series of tasks for him. Among other things, he wrote graffiti with the message “Hitler = Netanyahu,” and agreed to gather intelligence on the residents of a certain street in Tel Aviv. He also took photographs of the interior of a building on Borla Street to collect additional information for the agents.

The culmination of these activities was an agreement in which Verhovsky, in exchange for $100,000, would kill an Israeli scientist, which was allegedly the final plan of the foreign agents.

The indictment against Verhovsky comes at a time when Israel is facing multiple security threats, including Iranian influence. Verhovsky is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, when a decision will be made regarding the extension of his detention.

The prosecutor emphasized the seriousness of the charges given the current security situation in the country, pointing out that the accused acted against national interests while Israel was engaged in one of its most difficult wars in recent times.
