Hamas Figures Express Support For Iranian Regime: The Protestors Are Agents Of Israel And The U.S.;…

In response to the mass protests in Iran, which are being brutally suppressed by the regime there, figures affiliated with and close to Hamas have voiced clear and unequivocal support for the Iranian regime, which for decades has assisted Hamas with weapons and funding and encouraged its terrorist activity.[1] According to these figures, the Western media is “inflating” the scope of the protests and portraying them as a revolution that will overthrow the regime, whereas in reality they are limited in scope and stem from the dire economic situation that is caused by the Western sanctions on Iran. The writers added that the protestors in Iran are agents of Israel and the U.S. and that Iran should “launch a preemptive strike against the Israeli enemy.”

Below is a sampling of these responses:

The Protests In Iran Are Purely “Economic,” And Are Due To Western Sanctions

Hamas figure Ahmed Yousuf stated, in a January 13, 2026 article in the Palestinian daily Al-Quds, that the protests in Iran are solely “economic” in character and stem from the Western sanctions imposed on Iran. He added that these protests are essentially no different from demonstrations against the authorities in the U.S. and Israel, but Western media misrepresents them.

He wrote: “…Iran has returned to the focus of discourse in Western media. [This was done] by exaggerating the scope of the internal protests there, which are economic in nature, in a blatant [Western] attempt to reorder the priorities and divert attention from the major crime taking place in Palestine. There is nothing new in this scenario. Since the victory of the [Islamic] Revolution in 1979, Iran has known recurring waves of protest driven by different motives and different causes: from the student protests of the 1990s to the post-election demonstrations of 2009, the protests over the rising living costs and unemployment in 2017 and 2019, and the social protests of 2022. At each of these junctures, the West bet on a scenario of implosion, and each time those bets failed, for Iran remained united, capable of absorbing shocks and recalibrating its internal harmony.

“It is impossible to understand the protests currently taking place [in Iran] without [considering] the suffocating economic situation in which Iran has been placed for more than four decades due to the system of American and Western economic sanctions that began in 1979…

“Despite this context, [Western media] is turning the protests into a program for overthrowing the regime, using a familiar propaganda discourse that is employed whenever some country fails to obey the U.S. The glaring paradox is that, when the same thing happens in other countries, the scenario [of regime overthrow] is not raised. [For example,] in major U.S. cities there are mass demonstrations against [the Trump administration’s] policies that support [Israeli Prime Minister] Benjamin Netanyahu’s genocidal war in Gaza, as well as protests related to the economic and social situation [in the U.S.]. Yet despite this, no one speaks of the fall of the American regime. The same applies to Israel, [where] protests against Netanyahu over corruption scandals, security failures and war crimes have not subsided, yet no one discusses the option of regime overthrow. Only when it comes to Iran do terms such as ‘collapse’ and ‘chaos’ come to mind…

“Experience shows that these bets, like those before them, are bound to lose, and that despite the pressures and challenges, Iran will remain an active regional player capable of repairing what has been damaged and strengthening its alliances…”[2]

The West Is “Inflating” The Protests With The Intention Of Attacking Iran

In a January 10, 2026 article on his Telegram account, Hamas figure Ibrahim Al-Madhoun, member the National Relations Department of Hamas abroad, claimed that, contrary to reports in the “Western media,” the protests in Iran are limited in scope and the majority of the Iranian people remain united around the regime. He warned that Israel and the U.S. could exploit the protests to carry out attacks against Iran, writing:

“The events in Iran resemble a media-intelligence game more than they resemble genuine and broad popular protests. The amplification of the protests in the media, especially in the Western press, does not accurately reflect the reality on the Iranian street or the true balance of power there.

“There is no doubt that a significant sector of the Iranian people is not part of the [Islamic] Revolution and opposes the regime… but the protests have remained limited in their spread and their effectiveness. So far, they have not reached a level capable of toppling regimes, especially in a country [like Iran], which has a stable regime, effective security mechanisms, a religious organizational structure and a broad public base numbering in the millions, capable of mobilizing when necessary [to defend the regime]…

“Most of the influential public [sectors] still [support] the regime for reasons having to do with religious affiliation, interests, fear or a combination of these factors. Therefore, the talk about replacing the regime, restoring the monarchy, or partitioning Iran by means of the protests is not realistic at this stage. The protests may even produce the opposite effect, because, by provoking the regime, they reinforce it and increase its internal cohesion.

“The real concern is not the protests themselves, but that they could be exploited to prepare the ground for broad Israeli-American aggression against Iran. If that happens, Iran could present the entire region with a dangerous and complex future, with all options on the table…”[3]

Iran Must Attack Israel, Which Is Behind The Protests

In posts on his X account, Fayez Abu Shamala, a columnist for the Hamas daily Filastin who was close to slain Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, expressed support for the Iranian regime, claimed that the protesters opposing it were Israeli and American collaborators, and called on Iran to launch a preemptive strike against Israel. For example, on January 13 he shared an image from the Iranian news agency Fars, and captioned it: “Mass demonstrations in Tehran in support of the Iranian regime, in response to the despicable protests backed by America and the Israeli enemy.”[4]

In a post from January 11, he wrote: “The only way the Iranian leadership can save itself from the noose of the plot [to overthrow the regime] is to launch a preemptive strike against the Israeli enemy. If Iran hesitates and delays, as it did during the Al-Aqsa Flood campaign [the war in the Gaza Strip], the Zionist alliance may win the battle and succeed in its plans.”[5] [1] Over the years Hamas officials and Iranian officials have attested to the close ties and coordination between Hamas and Iran and to Iran’s significant contribution to arming Hamas and developing its capabilities.
