Quake Hits Northwestern Iran

A02948338.jpgTEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- An earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale jolted the district of Basmanj in the vicinity of Tabriz in Iran’s northwestern province of Eastern Azerbaijan on Sunday.

The seismological network of Tabriz affiliated to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University registered the quake at 13:29 hours local time (09:59 GMT).

The epicenter of the quake was located in an area measuring 46.4 degrees in longitude and 38.2 degrees in latitude.

The tremor panicked residents who poured to the streets after they experienced a fourth quake in just 24 hours. Earlier three other quakes measuring 3.9, 4.6 and 3.4 on the Richter scale had jolted the city of Tabriz.

FNA reports said that the last quake caused heavy traffic jams in the city.

No reports have yet been sent on the possible number of casualties or damage to properties by the quakes, but schools have been closed from the fears that students might get hurt if more tremors hit the city.
