IAEA: US Iran Report Matches UN Agency

A0332010.jpgTEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- A new US intelligence review that concludes Iran is pursuing a peaceful nuclear technology is consistent with the UN atomic watchdog agency’s own findings and “should help to defuse the current crisis”, the organization’s chief said Tuesday.

“Although Iran still needs to clarify some important aspects of its past and present nuclear activities, the agency has no concrete evidence of an ongoing nuclear weapons program or undeclared nuclear facilities in Iran,” International Atomic Energy Agency director-general Mohamed ElBaradei said in a statement.

Iran welcomed the report and demanded Washington change its policies seeking new sanctions.

However, US President George W Bush, who said that a “great discovery” as recently as August had prompted the US intelligence community’s stunning reversal of its long-held view insisted that Iran remains dangerous and urged continued pressure.

The NIE report is viewed as a source of discredit not only for Bush, but also for all neoconservatives priding on their knowledge of Iran.
