TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran plans to conduct training exercises to increase the country’s response under emergency conditions in the advent of an oil spill.
“Since the International Maritime Organization has named the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea ‘special marine areas’ due to the heavy marine traffic through these areas we should establish measures for dealing with possible pollution incidents,” press tv quoted Hassan Najafi, deputy director of ports and special economic zones at Iran’s Ports and Shipping Organization as saying.
The two-day national exercise will be begin on February 4 at the Imam Khomeini Port.
According to the obligations stipulated in International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Cooperation, 1990 (Maritime Law), parties are required to establish measures for dealing with pollution incidents both nationally an in cooperation with other countries.
