China has proposed a three-step approach to address the Palestinian issue

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday that China has proposed a three-step approach to resolve the Palestinian issue.

Wang made this statement during the closing ceremony of the reconciliation dialogue among Palestinian factions and the signing of a declaration aimed at ending divisions and strengthening unity among 14 Palestinian parties.

Noting that the Palestinian issue is a central problem in the Middle East, Wang emphasized that China does not seek its own interests regarding the Palestinian issue. He added that China was one of the first countries to recognize the Palestine Liberation Organization and the State of Palestine.

China has also consistently strongly supported the Palestinian people in restoring their legitimate national rights, he added.

Wang noted that the conflict in Gaza continues, and its adverse effects are spreading.

The first step of this approach is to promote a comprehensive, lasting, and sustainable ceasefire in the Gaza Strip as soon as possible and to ensure access to humanitarian aid. The international community should unite on the issue of the ceasefire.

The second step is to adhere to the principle of “Palestinians governing Palestine” and to work jointly on promoting post-war governance in Gaza. The international community should support Palestinian factions in forming a temporary government based on national consensus for effective management of Gaza and the West Bank.

The third step is to promote Palestine to full membership in the United Nations and to continue implementing the resolution for the creation of two states.
