UN Underlines Iran’s Significant Role in Iraq

A00947638.jpgTEHRAN (FNA)- A United Nations envoy said on Wednesday that Iran plays a significant part in supporting Iraq’s stability and economic developments given the close ties both countries share.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Staffan de Mistura conducted an official visit to Tehran on September 9-10, the United Nations Information Center (UNIC) in Tehran said in a statement.

During his stay, de Mistura discussed the recent gains and developments in Iraq including the role of the UN in promoting national reconciliation, regional dialogue and construction and development in the country in his meetings with several Iranian senior officials, the statement added.

It said that Iranian officials stressed the paramount importance of preserving the security, stability, independence and national unity of Iraq. They also appreciated the UN role in those respects.

It said that both sides agreed on the necessity to promote national dialogue and reconciliation particularly on elections and Disputed Internal Boundaries (DIBS), bolster economic development and increase regional engagement.

The sides also concurred to strengthen their cooperation aiming at increasing the regional cooperation in furthering the stability and development of Iraq.

De Mistura’s visit to Tehran was part of his objectives and mission to promote regional cooperation and dialogue with Iraq by encompassing the views of neighboring countries.

During his stay in Tehran, the UN representative held talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Saeed Jalili, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and a number of other high-ranking officials.
