Skopje – Macedonia police are probing claims by a witness who claims the secret police were behind an assassination attempt on ex-President Kiro Gligorov in 1995, reports say.
After the former Interior Minister Ljubomir Frckovski last week revealed the existence of a new possible key witness in the case, the prosecution has questioned him and the mysterious witness who is believed to be a former policeman, to determine the validity of their claims, local A1 television reported Tuesday.
“The Prosecutor’s Office gave us several clear instructions on how to act. We have formed a special team for this purpose that will strengthen the existing one,†the Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska told local media on Tuesday.
Last Tuesday, Frckoski stunned the public with his allegations in his newspaper column about the possible involvement of Macedonia’s secret police in the 1995 failed assassination bid against the country’s former President.
Frckoski tells the story of a former police employee who claims he took the famous photo of the car [a Citroen Ami 8], and that one day later, on October 3, 1995 it exploded alongside the President’s limousine seriously wounding Gligorov.
The police then claimed that the photo was taken by a German tourist but the man recently told Frckoski he took the photo by a direct order of his subordinates in the secret police.
The vehicle carrying the President was damaged by an explosion from another vehicle parked alongside the road which served as a regular route by which he travelled from his residence to his office in Skopje.
So far the investigation has only led to several possibilities but all have come to nothing. A Bulgarian multinational company as well as the Serbian Secret Service appeared in the media at the time as possible perpetrators.
Frckoski was head of the Interior Ministry at the time of the incident.
