2 British soldiers killed in southern Afghanistan

forceLONDON: Britain’s Ministry of Defense says two British soldiers have died in an explosion in southern Afghanistan. The ministry said the pair from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers were traveling in an armored vehicle which was hit by a blast Sunday in the Garmsir district of Helmand province.

The soldiers’ names have not been released but the ministry said next of kin had been informed.

Britain has about 8,000 troops in Afghanistan, most battling Taliban insurgents in Helmand.

The latest deaths bring to 152 the number of British personnel to die in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001.

Another British soldier, Lance Cpl. Christopher Harkett, 22, died in an explosion in Helmand Saturday.
