The US Deputy Secretary of State, James B. Steinberg, is set to visit Bulgaria Thursday to hold meetings with senior Bulgarian government officials, the US State Department has confirmed.
Steinberg is first traveling to Sarajevo on Wednesday to attend the EU-Western Balkans ministerial meeting organized by the Spanish-EU Presidency, with the participation of leaders from all the countries in the region. According to the US State Department this meeting further reaffirms US and EU support for the Euro-Atlantic integration of the Western Balkans.
On June 3, Steinberg will travel to Sofia for meetings with senior government officials. He will reportedly express U.S. appreciation for the partnership with Bulgaria and discuss a broad range of bilateral issues.
Steinberg, was born in 1953. He is an American academic and political advisor, currently. He was previously the Dean of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin.
As Deputy Secretary of State, Steinberg notably coined the phrase “strategic reassurance” to describe US-China relations suggestive of the idea that the United States should reassure China about welcoming China’s rise while China would reassure the US and its neighbors that it would not conflict with their interests.
