EC supports Kosovo’s EBRD membership

The European Commission gave its supports to Kosovo joining the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

After a meeting with Kosovo Economy and Finance Minister Ahmet Shala, European Commission for Economic Issues Olli Rehn said that Kosovo’s membership in the EBRD would be a “further significant step.”

Shala said that he is optimistic that Kosovo would receive enough votes to enter the EBRD, adding that the conditions for this have improved since the International Court of Justice (ICJ) gave its opinion on the legality of Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence.

Rehn also gave his support for the recently reached agreement for a credit arrangement between Kosovo and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), stating that this fulfills one of the important prerequisites for emergency financial help from the EC, which could be worth up to EUR 30mn.

He said that he is convinced that the first installment of aid would be able to be withdrawn by Kosovo soon.
