EP President Jerzy Buzek visit Cyprus

European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek is on a visit to Cyprus (Oct. 10-12) to push for more efforts towards lasting peace on the island. EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Füle is also expected to pay a visit to the island on Oct. 14.

Buzek is set to meet with Greek Cyprus leader Dimitris Christofias and other Greek Cypriot officials. He will then proceed to discuss with Derviş Eroğlu. Buzek’s press office reported that prior to his visit the president said he would be going to the island with a message of encouragement, support and trust to reach a solution. “We see the future of Cyprus as a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality as defined in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, comprising a federal government with a single international personality for the benefit of all island citizens,” Buzek said. Buzek pointed out that the European Union is much more than just a single market and that it is “first of all a community, and as such it is about solidarity.”
