TEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- Chairman of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission called on the United Nations to take urgent and serious measures with regard to the United States’ illegal actions in Iraq.
Speaking to FNA here on Saturday, Alaoddin Boroujerdi described the raid by the US troops on the Iranian consulate general in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil as a blatant violation of the international rules and regulations as well as the Vienna Convention.
“The United States’ policy in Iraq has come to a failure and Washington is now pursuing illegal and illogical methods to project its defeats and problems,” he said, adding that the invasion of the Iranian consulate office in Erbil is an indication of the feebleness and paralysis of the US military forces in Iraq.
Also describing the measure as unacceptable, the lawmaker stressed that it would not rescue (the US President George) Bush from the quagmire he has been trapped in Iraq.
“The invasion of the Iranian consulate general office in Erbil will not yield any fruits for the failed policies of the US president in Iraq,” he reiterated.
The senior MP also pointed to the duties of the United Nations and its member states, and underlined, “The UN Secretary General should adopt a stance against the United States’ violation of the laws while the member states should also show a proper reaction to the US so that such measures do not set a precedent or will turn into an established process in the world arena.”
According to local Kurdish officials, at around 3 a.m. US troops disarmed the guards outside the consulate, broke into the building and confiscated computers and documents while military helicopters were circling overhead. Despite Americans’ allegations, the liaison office had diplomatic protection and functioned as a consulate general issuing travel documents and carrying out other consular tasks. An Iranian flag flying over the building was hauled down during the raid.
