Bulgaria welcomes EU decision on Serbia

Bulgaria strongly welcomes the October 25 2010 by the European Union’s foreign ministers to forward to the European Commission Serbia’s application for EU membership, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolai Mladenov said.

The European Commission will be asked for its opinion on Serbia’s application to join the bloc.

The foreign ministers’ decision was “an important and logical step on the road to Serbia’s full membership of the EU,” said Mladenov, adding that the decision supported and enhanced the process of reforms in Serbia.

Serbia, he said, was a country of strategic interest both for Bulgaria and the EU as a whole, and the decision would step up the process of development of regional co-operation in South Eastern Europe, according to Mladenov.

Serbian deputy prime minister Bozidar Đelić expressed pleasure at the decision.
