The Netherlands supports Bulgaria’s Schengen accession

The Netherlands has a positive attitude towards Bulgaria’s efforts to cover the Schengen accession criteria.

“We recognize and welcome the efforts put bu Bulgaria into carrying out the reforms necessary for Bulgaria’s Schengen Agreement accession and we will continue to back your country on its way to achieving that, ” the Netherlands’ Prime Minister Mark Rutte has stated in a letter to his Bulgarian counterpart Boyko Borisov.

At the end of December, the European Commission has confirmed its position against tying Bulgaria and Romania’s Schengen zone entry with additional clauses and with the verification mechanism.

Bulgaria and Romania hope to join the border-free area in March 2011.
