TEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- Germany’s Ambassador to Tehran stressed European Union’s strong opposition to the adoption of any military measures against Iran, saying that the EU believes in negotiations as the only way to resolve the nuclear issue.
Speaking to FNA here on Tuesday, the envoy said that the measures adopted by the United Nations Security Council against Iran could be annulled and talks could be resumed as soon as Iran accepts the other side’s conditions.
He further reminded that UNSC Resolution 1737 has stipulated a 60-day deadline for Iran’s decision in this regard, and continued, “After the said period, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director general would compile a report on Iran’s practical response to the demands stated in the resolution.”
The diplomat said that adoption of such a complex decision by Iran requires a rather lengthy period of time, and stated that Iran’s response and the IAEA director general’s report would determine the measures which should be drawn up by the other side in future.
He reserved to comment on the violation of previous agreements by the EU, but said, “The talks between Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani and EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana sought to fill the gap between Iran and the West in such a way that both sides could save their face.”
“Although the two sides could attain good results in this ground and came very close to an agreement, the key officials were apparently not prepared to make the final decision,” the German ambassador to Iran mentioned.
