EU condemns Kosovo police operation on Serbia border

The European Union on Tuesday disapproved the Kosovo police seizure of two border crossings overnight amid mounting tension with Serbia over the movement of goods across the contested frontier.

“We believe the operation by the Kosovo authorities was not helpful and we do not approve it. This was not done in consultation with either the EU or the international community. We believe the situation needs to calm down”, a spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton announced.

Kosovo interior minister Bajram Rexhepi said Monday that police took control of border crossings in Brnjak, located north of Pristina in a Serb-majority area.

More than 90 percent of Kosovo’s imported food supplies come from Serbia.
