Serbian official says the coutry will get EU candidate status

Serbian Foreign Ministry’s Foreign Policy Council President Sonja Liht said Thursday she believed Serbia would get the EU candidate status.

She said that German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s statements during her recent visit to Belgrade constituted a list of wishes, some of which could be fulfilled, while others required serious discussion.

After Merkel’s visit on Wednesday, Liht still believes Serbia will get the EU candidate status. She stated it mostly depended on the European Commission’s report, due in October, and on Serbia itself, adding that the country had done a lot towards that goal.

“Merkel’s statements from yesterday are a list of wishes, of which some could be fulfilled, while others must be discussed seriously,” she noted, adding that Serbia obviously had a very difficult problem with dismantling parallel institutions in Kosovo, which was among Merkel’s statements.
