Montenegrins hope they will get a date for a start to EU membership talks at the EU leaders’ summit on December 9.
“We hope the European Council will follow the recommendation of the European Commission and set the date for opening of the negotiations”, Milan Rocen, the Montenegrin Foreign Minister, said at an OSCE conference on Tuesday in Lithuania.
However, EU members states are far from unanimous in support for a start to negotiations with Montenegro.
According to Montenegrin media reports, Germany supports opening negotiations but France is still hesitating.
Meanwhile, though supportive of Montenegro’s advance towards the EU, Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, has stated that Germany will want to see concrete results in the fight against organized crime and corruption before giving Podgorica a green light.
