Bosnia wants to follow Serbia’s EU path

New Bosnian Foreign Minister Zlatko Lagumdzija says European integration is more of a priority now that neighbouring Serbia has obtained candidate status.

Serbia’s success this week in obtaining EU candidate status should encourage Bosnia to speed up its own European integration process, the Foreign Minister said on Friday after meeting leaders of the Federation entity.

Zlatko Lagumdzija said that when he observed the joy on the face of Serbian President Boris Tadic, on hearing the EU decision in Brussels, it reminded him of how Bosnia and Herzegovina was lagging behind.

“When 10 years ago we fought for our membership in the Council of Europe, Serbia was behind us,” he noted.

“But today it is at least two years ahead of us [in terms of EU integration],” Lagumdzija added, noting that Serbia’s candidate status ought to help Bosnia.
